The bulwark of San Juan Evangelista, also known as the bulwark of the Accounting, of San Juan Bautista, or of the Bridge, was charged with defending the entrance that connected the city with the outlying district of Getsemaní by means of the San Francisco Bridge.
It was constructed about 1617 following the plan of the engineer Cristóbal de Roda, being a thin wall for that time. Some decades later, in 1630, the governor and engineer Francisco de Murga improved it by raising a rampart.
