Built under orders from the governor and engineer Francisco de Murga in 1631, it forms part of the defense projected for the outlying district of Getsemaní. At the beginning of the XVIII century it needed repair, a task which Juan de Herrera y Sotomayor undertook in 1730; notwithstanding, in 1753 Lorenzo de Solís reported on the poor condition of San José, with Antonio de Arévalo in charge of restoring it about 1770. The Bulwark of San José has a parapet with embrasures, a sentry-box, a vault for the guard, a staircase, and an access ramp.
