The Bulwark of Santa Barbara protected the right flank of the former Media Luna Entrance, which, together with the Bulwark of Santa Teresa formed the defensive system that protected the only overland access to the city. It was constructed between 1631 and 1633 under orders from the governor and engineer Francisco de Murga, and a century later, Juan de Herrera y Sotomayor repaired the damage caused by the attack of the French in 1697. The bulwark has a ramp, two sentry-boxes, two vaults, a parapet with embrasures and another barbette battery.
